Check your financial health for prosperity

Any time is an ideal time to take stock of your finances. Here are 10 issues to consider.

1. Take good care of yourself. Poor health is the biggest threat to financial security.

2. Have "what-if" documents. An enduring power of attorney lets you name someone to take over if illness or injury affects your decision-making ability. Otherwise, your spouse or another family member will need official permission.

You need a will, especially if there are children from a prior marriage, you're in a common-law partnership not covered by provincial succession laws, or you're leaving bequests outside the family.

A living will or medical directive lets you state how far doctors should go in keeping you alive.

3. Protect yourself and your family with adequate insurance. Life insurance is essential, as is disability coverage.

4. Check your home and auto insurance. Is the coverage adequate? Can you boost deductibles to reduce premiums?

5. Understand your pension and insurance benefits at work. Check for overlaps with personal plans and your spouse's employment benefits.

6. Compile a net worth statement. Determine the difference between total assets and total debts to find out where you stand.

7. Pay down debt that is not tax-deductible. Invest the interest you save.

8. Pay yourself first. Have RRSP contributions and other investment money automatically deducted from your pay cheque or bank account.

9. Review your investment strategy. Do you understand what you hold? Have a plan and stick to it.

10. Minimize tax. While doing this year's tax return, look for prudent ways to save tax.
